Involved in the Community

WVA is more than just an ambulance transport service. We strive to improve public education and support local programs. We visit many of the Town's schools, compete in the Chili Fest, provide information and services at the Shad Derby and Northwest Park Fair, cover the high school football games and Columbus Day Soccer Tourn, and some years the Torchlight parade.

Public Education in the Schools:

WVA strives to maintain an active role within the Windsor School System. WVA visits both public and private schools within the town to talk to students about injury prevention, careers in EMS, as well as giving tours of ambulances and demonstrations of certain EMS equipment WVA carries. WVA also provides assistance to the Medical Emergencies Class offered at Windsor High School which teaches high school students about EMS services and certifies them as Emergency Medical Responders.

Chili Challenge:

In 2009 WVA Paramedic Alan Sklar made the decision to enter WVA into the Town’s Chili Challenge with EMT Laura Kennedy. He felt his own personal recipe for Chili had what it took to take down the competition, and boy was he right! WVA placed 1st place in two different years of the Chili Challenge. This event is another excellent way WVA demonstrates its visibility within the community, even when it doesn’t require providing medical care.>

Columbus Day Soccer Tournaments:

Each year the Windsor Soccer Club hosts one of the largest Travel Soccer League tournaments in the region on the Columbus Day Weekend. For years WVA has been the sole provider of medical care on site at a total of 5 separate field locations for the 3 day event. This 3 day event has proven to be the most challenging standby for the WVA EMS system requiring the use of the entire WVA fleet of 7 vehicles as well as deployment of our bike team to cover each location as well as responding to 911 calls within the town.>

Multiple Sclerosis Bike-A-Thon:

Each Year the National Multiple Sclerosis Society hosts the Steelcase “Cross the Countryside” Race that starts and ends at the Griffin Road Business Center in Windsor. This event includes a 2, 10, 25, 50 and 100 mile course which spans a large part of the north central area of Connecticut and attracts both the amateur and professional cyclist. This is a big event four our Bike Team which covers the start and finish line as well as patrolling the 2, 10, and 25 mile courses. WVA operates in concert with East Granby, Granby, Suffield, Enfield, South Windsor and Windsor Locks EMS systems to provide seamless medical care and help raise awareness about Multiple Sclerosis.

Kids Wellness and Safety Fair:

Each year the Windsor Early Childhood Council (ECC) hosts the Kids Wellness and Safety Fair as part of the Northwest Park Country Fair. WVA operates in collaboration with the ECC and the Town of Windsor Safety Services (Police, Fire) to provide safety awareness to children in the form of injury prevention, bike safety, 911 awareness, and fire prevention, as well as fun and interactive activities for children.

Shad Derby Festival and Parade:

The annual Shad Derby Festival and Parade attracts many people to the Town Green for a day of games and activities, fair demonstrations and shopping, and carnival type food. The event draws an average 5,000 people to the Town Green each year. WVA operates at the Shad Derby providing medical coverage for the festival using our Bike Team as well as staffing a full Medical Aid Station. WVA also has a demo booth at the Derby where we showcase our latest medical technology and community projects as well as provide awareness about WVA in the form of public information and volunteer recruitment opportunities. The day is capped off by a Parade through the center of town that WVA participates in where we showcase our fleet of 7 vehicles.

Windsor High School Varsity Football Games:

As required by the state governing body for recreational school sports, WVA provides medical standby for all of the home games of the Windsor High School Warrior Varsity Football Games. We provide one ambulance for each game and work interactively with the Windsor Athletic Training Staff to ensure exceptional medical care for the Warrior Team Members.
