Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What number do I call in the event of a medical emergency?
A: For any emergency call 911
Q: Who responds to a medical emergency?
A: A Windsor Police officer is automatically sent to medical emergencies in town as a first responder. Windsor Police Officers are equipped with medical kits and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and are able to initiate medical care while the ambulance is in route. Citizens who live in the Poquonock area may also see members of the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department respond to initiate medical care. Shortly after, an ambulance with at least one EMT-B and one Paramedic will arrive.
Q: What is the difference between an EMT-Basic and a Paramedic?
A: EMT-Basics (EMT-Bs) are trained in basic first aid maneuvers such as CPR, bleeding control, childbirth and airway management. EMT-B's receive several hundred hours of training.
Paramedics receive over a thousand hours of training and are capable of performing many more advanced procedures than an EMT-B. They can administer over 30 different drugs, perform advanced airway management, read & interpret EKG's, and possess advanced patient assessment skills.
Q: What can I do to make it easier for emergency crews to find my house?
A: It is essential for your house to be clearly marked so that emergency responders can easily find it. Make sure that your house number is clearly visible from the road and large enough to be seen from a distance. Also, reflective house numbers make it easier for responders to locate your house at night. The more visible your house is, the quicker help will be able to arrive.
Q: What happens if a Windsor Volunteer Ambulance crew is not available?
A: If for some reason a Windsor crew is not available or is already on a call, an American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance will respond. In this case, a Windsor Police Officer will still be the first responder and the AMR ambulance will provide the same advanced life support services offered by Windsor Ambulance.
Q: If Windsor Ambulance is a Volunteer service, why do I have to pay for my trip to the hospital?
A: Windsor Ambulance charges for its services in order to pay for state of the art lifesaving devices, medical equipment, and vehicle/building costs.
Q: Where can I access HIPAA information or request a PCR from my trip to the hospital?
A: Contact Laura Kennedy by calling (860) 688-8244 ext. 113 or by emailing her at Laura.Kennedy@windsorctems.com
